Traditional Craft of Kochi – Tosa Handmade Washi Paper

"Tosa Washi," a traditional craft of Kochi, is a hand-made paper technique with a history spanning over 1,000 years.

At the Inoue Handmade Paper Workshop, visitors to Kochi can learn to make washi under the guidance of artisans,
and create one-of-a-kind pieces such as washi lamps and washi panel art decorated with torn-paper collage.

Washi paper is created using only plants and the clear waters of the Niyodo River.
The art of washi paper-making passes down the wisdom of Japan, where people have long been connected to nature, to the present day.

Introductory Washi Experience & Traditional Papermaking Workshop

Hold Nature in Your Hands

Experience Traditional Tosa Washi Papermaking in Kochi, Japan

At Inoue Tesuki Washi Workshop in Tosa City, Kochi Prefecture, visitors can experience the traditional craft of Japanese handmade paper—a practice that has continued for over a hundred years.
Our washi is made entirely from natural materials, using the pure waters of the Niyodo River, renowned for its crystal-clear “Niyodo Blue.”

We use only plants such as kozo (paper mulberry) and tororo-aoi (sunset hibiscus), without any chemical additives.
Each sheet of paper is slowly born through the harmony of nature’s gifts and traditional handcrafting techniques, just as it was centuries ago.

For travelers, we offer popular hands-on experiences, such as creating your own washi lamp or art frame.
These workshops are suitable for beginners and families with children, providing a relaxing way to enjoy one of Kochi’s most cherished traditional crafts.
