The Crystal-Clear Niyodo River

Nurtured by the rich natural beauty of Kochi Prefecture, the Niyodo River is celebrated for its crystal-clear waters known as “Niyodo Blue.”
Along its basin, the traditional craft of Tosa Washi has been passed down for over a thousand years.

At the Inoue Tesuki Washi Workshop, visitors can experience the art of Japanese papermaking alongside skilled artisans and create their own one-of-a-kind piece — such as a washi lamp or an art frame decorated with torn-paper collage.

Through washi made from natural materials and the pure waters of the Niyodo River, we invite you to rediscover the deep connection between nature and people that lies at the heart of Japan’s craftsmanship.

It is home to the Niyodo River, the cleanest river in Japan.

A variety of traditional cultures have been born in the river basin.

Traditional Craft of Kochi – Tosa Handmade Washi Paper

Tosa Washi, a traditional craft of Kochi, is a hand-papermaking technique with a history of more than 1,000 years.

At Inoue Handcrafted Washi Workshop, visitors to Kochi can learn directly from a craftsman and experience making washi by hand—
then create a one-of-a-kind piece, such as a washi lampshade or panel art decorated with torn washi paper.

Made only from plants and the pure waters of the Niyodo River,
washi carries with it the quiet wisdom of how people in Japan have lived in connection with nature for centuries.

Hold Nature in Your Hands

Experience Traditional Tosa Washi Papermaking in Kochi, Japan

At Inoue Tesuki Washi Workshop in Tosa City, Kochi Prefecture, visitors can experience the traditional craft of Japanese handmade paper—a practice that has continued for over a hundred years.
Our washi is made entirely from natural materials, using the pure waters of the Niyodo River, renowned for its crystal-clear “Niyodo Blue.”

We use only plants such as kozo (paper mulberry) and tororo-aoi (sunset hibiscus), without any chemical additives.
Each sheet of paper is slowly born through the harmony of nature’s gifts and traditional handcrafting techniques, just as it was centuries ago.

For travelers, we offer popular hands-on experiences, such as creating your own washi lamp or art frame.
These workshops are suitable for beginners and families with children, providing a relaxing way to enjoy one of Kochi’s most cherished traditional crafts.
